AUTOMATIC ZONING SYSTEMS

A zoning system allows you to condition sections of your home without having to condition the entire home all at once. This allows for different temperatures in each zone depending on your comfort levels. A zoning system consists of A main control panel, automatic powered dampers installed in the ductwork and adding a 2nd or 3rd thermostat in the desired areas of the home.

A zoning system works wonders for larger homes with only one furnace and air conditioner. They are best served for two story homes and long ranch style homes where the hvac system is centrally located. For two story homes that typically have a hard time cooling the 2nd floor or heating the 1st floor, a zoning system will have a thermostat on each floor and provide precise temperatures on each floor all year round.  The same for large ranch homes, except with a thermostat on each wing of the home. Depending on how the ductwork was installed a zoning system also works great for finished basements.

The Answer is more than likely YES.  Unless your home doesn't have any hot, cold or uncomfortable areas and everyone in the home enjoys the exact same temperatures!  A zoning system will eliminate hot and cold areas, keep each floor at precisely the same temperature you set it for. Or if one person in the home likes their area at 75 degrees and another person likes it at 72 degrees, a zoning system will provide these seperate temperatures. Or if you have areas of your home that don't get used, you can zone them off from the rest of the home. Comfort is a huge benefit of a zoning system, but another perk is energy savings! A zoning system can potentially save you up to 30% on your heating and cooling costs!

The most common zoning set-up has 2 and sometimes 3 zones/thermostats. Although, you can have up to eight zones/thermostats. There can be a zone for each floor, each wing, each bedroom, livingroom, kitchen, basement, etc. Most standard furnace and AC systems will work with a zoning system with up to 3 zones. Any zones beyond 3 will require a multi-stage or a variable capacity furnace and AC.
